Nahki Wells came on as a late substitute in Burnley’s draw away to Huddersfield Town and defeat at home to Liverpool in the Premier League.

Wells entered the fray in the 81st minute in his team’s 0-0 draw against his former club Huddersfield on Saturday. He came close to breaking the deadlock when his close-range poke was blocked by goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

Lossl admits “there was contact” between him and Burnley’s Jeff Hendrick in a second-half incident that saw a clear penalty not given.

It happened when Hendrick — who took advantage of a slip by Tommy Smith — attempted to take the ball beyond the advancing Lossl, before his right leg was clearly clipped by the Denmark goalkeeper.

“I touched him,” Lossl said. “I spoke to the referee and I said there was contact. I didn’t do it on purpose, but there was contact. I told the referee after but it was his decision.”

Sean Dyche, the Burnley manager, said it was “impossible” that a penalty was not awarded.

“Jeff has gone down in a natural manner and he does not get it,” Dyche said.

“It seems people who go down in a theatrical way do get it [penalty decisions], but Jeff goes down in a natural way as his foot is clearly taken away, but he does not get it.”

Wells came on in the 86th minute against Liverpool yesterday for his third appearance for Burnley since his £5 million move in August.

Ragnar Klavan scored in injury time to give Liverpool a dramatic victory and extend their unbeaten run to 16 matches.

Burnley looked to have earned a point when Johann Gudmundsson equalised with just three minutes of normal time remaining. But Klavan headed home from almost on the goalline as the Liverpool snatched all three points.

Sadio Mane had given Liverpool the lead earlier in the second half with a superb shot from the edge of the area.

Sean Dyche, the Burnley manager, believed his side were well worth a point.

“We grew into the game, the second half was an even affair,” he said.

“On and off the pitch we have moved forward in a calendar year. We are becoming assured of ourselves in this division.

“We are playing a more mixed game now. Last year we got it forward more often but we are calmer now.

“We are resolute defensively, we have added to what we had. The quality has risen. To be on 34 points and be unfortunate to not have 35 shows what a season we have had.”

Reggie Lambe was substituted in the 80th minute as Carlisle United lost 3-1 away to his former club Mansfield Town yesterday.

Kane Hemmings scored twice as Mansfield stormed into the Sky Bet League Two play-off places.

Hemmings’s brace was sandwiched by a Rhys Bennett effort to continue Mansfield’s fine form, which has seen them lose only once in 18 games.

Carlisle had pulled a goal back through Jamie Devitt’s penalty but they missed the chance to close the gap on the top seven.

Lambe was also substituted in the 76th minute as Carlisle lost 1-0 at home to Coventry City on Saturday.

Marc McNulty struck five minutes after half-time but then saw his 76th-minute penalty saved by Carlisle goalkeeper Jack Bonham.

Jonté Smith scored a minute after coming on as a 75th-minute substitute in Lewes’ 3-1 win at home to South Park in the Bostik League South Division on Saturday.

It was Smith’s second goal in as many games, having also scored a penalty in the league leader’s 2-0 win at home to Hastings United on Boxing Day.

Smith also played the full match in Lewes’ 2-1 defeat away to Horsham yesterday.

Goals from Charlie Harris and Hakeem Adelakun gave Horsham a two-nil lead at half-time. Ghassimu Sow pulled a goal back for Lewes in the second half.

Goalkeeper Jahquil Hill made a costly error for Rushall Olympic in their 1-1 draw at home to Farsley Celtic in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier on Saturday.

Hill, who made several fine saves, fumbled a routine through ball in the 89th minute to allow Danny Ellis to tap home.

A first-half penalty from Danny Waldron had given the home side the lead. Milan Butterfield, the Bermuda under-20 midfield, on loan from League One Walsall, played the full match for Rushall.

Rushall kicked off the new year with a 5-0 defeat away to Stourbridge yesterday.
