Lennon boosts Burnley’s firepower

New capture: Aaron Lennon has joined Burnley from Everton

Burnley have brought in more frontline experience with the signing of England winger Aaron Lennon from Everton this week

Lennon, formerly of Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur, adds to the list of attacking options for manager Sean Dyche, with Bermudian striker Nahki Wells also trying to break through as a starter after a handful of late substitute appearances. Wells, 27, has been linked with a loan spell in January, with Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa, who tried to sign him last year, thought to be interested.

Dyche believes the 30-year-old Lennon, who won 21 caps for England and has made over 350 appearances for Everton, Leeds and Tottenham, will bring valuable experience to Burnley.

“The obvious advantages are his experience, along with his pace,” Dyche told the Burnley website. “He’s another rounded figure in the Premier League in our camp, because we haven’t got that many. He can rub off on the players as well. Some do it by the way they go about their business and their understanding of the level.

“He’s a different type of player in our camp because we want to keep shifting it forward. It’s finding that nice balance between players who can develop with us and players who are more rounded, who can add to the group.”

Lennon was Burnley’s first signing during the transfer window when he signed on Tuesday. His move to Lancashire came a week after Everton signed a Theo Walcott, a similar-type player, from Arsenal. Lennon made 15 league appearances for Everton this season.

“Burnley was the club I wanted to come to and I can’t wait to get started,” Lennon said. “I‘m looking forward to playing here.

“The club is moving forward and I want to hopefully play a part in that to keep it going in that direction.

“I think I’ve still got a lot to offer. I am only 30 and I still want to play at the highest level. I have missed a bit of football in the last year or so and I just want to get back and play as much as possible.

“I’ve never had an easy game against Burnley and this year they have done fantastic. They deserve to be where they are.

“There are 14 games to go and hopefully we can kick on and maintain a place in the top half, which would be brilliant for the football club.”

Burnley, who have dropped to eighth in the standings after a recent slump, had another important signing this week when Dyche penned a new 4½ contract, extending his stay at the club until June 2022.

Dyche, a former Watford manager and defender, has been the Burnley manager since 2012 and has led the club to two promotions to the Premier League as one of Burnley’s most successful modern-day managers.

He was linked this season with a few Premier League clubs, including Everton.

Burnley’s league position of eighth is their highest at this stage of a season since 1975.
