Nahki Wells is involved in a fierce five-man battle for places in Burnley’s attack, according to Chris Wood, the Bermudian’s team-mate.

Wells has made seven substitute appearances since joining Burnley from Premier League rivals Huddersfield Town for £5 million during the transfer window in August.

Meanwhile, Wood has been in fine form since returning from injury, scoring three goals in 75 minutes of action away to West Ham United and at home to Everton.

The New Zealand player has netted seven goals this season and formed a promising partnership with Ashley Barnes, who has scored in three successive league matches.

However, with Wells, Sam Vokes — who scored twice for Wales in a friendly against China last week — and Jonathan Walters pushing for starts, Wood knows the team’s forwards can ill afford to rest on their laurels.

“[Barnes] is a fantastic player and he’s shown that,” Wood told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“He took on a big responsibility coming into the side and doing well, he’s scoring goals, the manager put a lot of confidence in him and now I’m back hopefully we can play two up top.

“We’ve worked well together in the games I’ve come on and I believe all of our strikers work well together, we see it in training, Vokes and Barnes, Vokes and me, me and Barnes, and then we’ve got Walts and Nahki pushing, it’s the most competitive area of the team.

“We’ve got five very accomplished strikers, all have played in the Premier League and done extremely well for their clubs over the years.

“If you’re not performing or not doing what is needed for the team there is someone else that will do, so it keeps us on our toes but it gets the best out of everybody as well.”

Burnley, who are seventh in the table, are away to basement dwellers West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Albion are ten points adrift of safety and seven points behind Stoke City, who are one place above them. Dyche’s side have not played since beating West Ham 3-0 and are undefeated in the their past three matches.
