Jonté Smith has been rewarded with a new contract by Lewes after helping the English non-League side gain promotion to the Bostik League Premier Division.

The 23-year-old, who rejoined the club in November 2016 after a short spell with Welling United, was a key component in Lewes’ promotion campaign, scoring 20 goals in all competitions this season.

The new deal will keep the Bermuda striker at the East Sussex club until the end of next season with an option for a further year.

Darren Freeman, the Lewes manager, said he was delighted that “class act” Smith had committed his future to the club.

“Jonté showed that he’s more than capable of scoring goals at Bostik Premier level when we were last in that league a couple of seasons ago,” Freeman, a former Brighton & Hove Albion forward. said.

“He’s a class act and he’s added more to his game over the course of this season. I’m delighted we’ve got him with us for next season.”

Lewes signed another striker this week, with 27-year-old Luke Blewden returning to the club from Tonbridge Angels.

Lewes finished second in the South Division table with 99 points, three behind champions Carshalton Athletic.

Since being released by Crawley Town in 2014, Smith has played for five different teams in three different countries.

He had two goal-laden years in Scandinavia at Kemi Kings of Finland and Norwegian side Floy before returning to England in 2015 after joining Gloucester City in the Vanarama National League North.
