Medeiros books place in final for Bermuda
Katelyn Medeiros kneed Bermuda into the Division Two final of the Concacaf Girls’ Under-15 Championship with the only goal of their 1-0 win over St Lucia yesterday at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Medeiros scored after 27 minutes, by getting on the end of a cross from the left and kneeing it in from close range.
Bermuda, who face Grenada in the final tomorrow, could have won by more, but an early effort on goal from Adia Gibbons was well saved by the St Lucia goalkeeper. Coach Vance Brown praised his team for the way they defended their lead, with co-captains Danni Watson and Koa Goodchild solid in the heart of the defence.
“St Lucia were a tough team physically, very strong, but our girls stuck to the game plan and did well,” Brown said. “They are excited, as anybody should be, in making a final in the Concacaf region. They are ready to go to the final.
“I told the girls they would have to be very aggressive in the attacking part of the field, and during that aggression we had a goalscoring opportunity and Katelyn Medeiros finished it off.”
Medeiros, recently one of the youngest members of the under-17 team, was playing as striker and Bermuda had other chances to increase their lead in the second half.
“We had one or two one-on-ones with the goalkeeper but the ’keeper ended up making good saves,” Brown said.
“After the goal, they tried to come back but we absorbed the pressure and stuck to our game plan by still being aggressive.
“Katelyn had a good game as well as our central defenders, Danni Watson and Koa Goodchild.”
Grenada take on Bermuda at noon tomorrow after beating Martinique in a penalty shoot-out in the other semi-final.
“The girls feel they are in it to win it, that was our motto,” Brown added.
