Leverock nets seventh goal of season

Goal threat: Danté Leverock celebrates his seventh goal of the season in his team’s 1-0 win

Danté Leverock headed home his seventh goal of the season to earn Narva Trans victory over Tallinna Kalev in the Estonian Premier Division yesterday.

The Bermuda defender struck in the 37th minute to help his side to a 1-0 win, which leaves them fourth in the table.

Narva Trans were reduced to ten men when forward Aber Basha received a second yellow card in the 84th minute.

Nahki Wells helped Queens Park Rangers to their first win of the Sky Bet Championship season, with a 1-0 victory at home to Wigan Athletic yesterday.

Wells, making his QPR debut after joining the London club on a season-long loan from Burnley on Thursday, earned praise for linking up well with strike partner Tomar Hemed, who scored in the 35th minute. Hemed signed for QPR on loan for the rest of the season from Brighton & Hove Albion on the same day as Wells.

Steve McClaren, the QPR manager, said both new captures showed their quality.

“Les [Ferdinand] Tony [Fernandes] and Ruben [Gnanalingam] have worked for three or four weeks on bringing two strikers in with the quality of that,” said the former England manager. “We’ve had to bang down doors and make sure we got them, they’ve provided the finance for that and they have got to take a lot of credit.

“We’re looking all over for quality players. We’ve not brought many in. I’ve got to say Toni Leistner was brilliant today, defending that box with [Joel] Lynchy, and with Nahki and Tomer, two quality strikers.”

McClaren, whose side had lost their opening four games, added: “The team looked to have more belief, character and resilience to fight because we know we’ve got chances to score,” he said. “We’re just delighted at the quality of Nahki and Tomer — they deserve a lot of credit and the supporters should acknowledge that.”

Reggie Lambe came on as a 79th-minute substitute in Cambridge United’s 1-0 defeat at home to Cheltenham Town in League Two on yesterday.
