Nahki Wells finally got off the mark for Queens Park Rangers after scoring in their 3-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship last night.

Wells came on as a second-half substitute and struck in the 83rd minute to end his goalless run stretching back to April 2017 when he was still a Huddersfield Town player.

The striker failed to score in ten substitute appearances for Burnley in the Premier League last season and had drawn a blank in his previous nine games for QPR having joined on loan in August.

Wells entered the fray with his side leading two-nil and wrapped up the win with a thundering left-footed finish from Eberechi Eze’s through ball.

It was the Bermudian’s first goal in 29 matches.

Tomer Hemed, who joined QPR on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion on the same day as Wells, headed home in the first half after Cameron Dawson, the Wednesday goalkeeper, could only parry away Pawel Wszolek’s effort.

Wszolek also created the second for Luke Freeman who powered a header into the far corner from the winger’s cross in the 55th minute.

The victory moves QPR into the top half of the table with their third win in four matches.

Steve McClaren, the QPR manager, said he was delighted to see Wells rediscover his scoring touch.

“It was important Nahki got off the mark, so that was very satisfying.” McClaren added: “I think it was a bit sticky at the beginning with no tempo and they played a lot of football. It was in front of us, though, and we were comfortable and we looked past it.

“Once we got aggressive and started to get around the park we had chances to score more, even in the first half. It was very professional with another clean sheet. We defended the box so, so well by winning our headers when we had to and I am just delighted about the goals and who scored them.”

Wells dropped to the bench for the first time since moving to the West London club in their 2-0 win away to Ipswich Town last weekend.

The 28-year-old will be hoping for recall when QPR take on Aston Villa at home on Friday night.

“We started the week well, the middle has gone well and now we need to end it well,” McClaren said. “We put a marker down tonight, but it’s about Friday now.

“This Championship is weird, but we are progressing and going forward. This was a big one for us tonight as we needed to beat a team above us with high expectations and we’ve done that. We need to beat another on Friday with even bigger expectations.”

Reggie Lambe was also on the scoresheet last night, netting his fourth goal of the season in Cambridge United’s 2-0 victory away to Swindon Town in League Two. He scored the opener in the eleventh minute, catching Swindon’s Olly Lancashire dithering in possession before finishing with his left foot. Cambridge doubled their lead a minute later as Jevani Brown turned in a cross from George Maris at the far post.
