Uncertainty over Smith’s move
Transfer deadline-day has come and gone and uncertainty still surrounds the future of Bermuda striker Jonté Smith.
Smith, 24, was rumoured to heading to Sky Bet League One club Oxford United after impressing the coaching staff, scoring a brace in a trial match against Championship side Reading on Tuesday. He also scored a hat-trick in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Oxford while on trial for Swindon Town last month.
Smith trained with Oxford’s first team this morning (Thursday) before the club made an initial bid which was turned down by Lewes, according to a source at SRV Sports, the company which represents the player.
The source added that both parties engaged in further negotiations but were unable to agree to a deal before the transfer window closed.
Smith joined Lewes in 2016 on a three-year deal.
