X-Roads fighting to stay in title race
X-Roads could be mathematically eliminated from the title race this weekend, while Somerset Trojans are a win away from climbing off the bottom of the table for the first time since October.
Coach Farid El Karfa’s side have been on a slump in the league, failing to win in their past six games with their only two victories this year coming in the FA Cup where they have reached the semi-finals for the first time.
Not only can X-Roads be out of league title contention when PHC Zebras visit Garrison Field tomorrow, but they could also lose third place to Dandy Town who play North Village on Sunday.
The Zebras will be without captain Cecoy Robinson, their top scorer with 14 league goals, as well as defender Daren Usher who are travelling to Cuba with the Bermuda team.
“We just need to go out there and put our heads down and work one game at a time,” Robinson said of his team’s chances of repeating as league champions.
“Robin Hood are still only three points behind and there’s enough games for them to come back so we can’t think about the end result.
“After we play [X-Roads] we still have Hood again to play, so there’s definitely all to play for. We just need to make sure that we dig deep and stay tight for the back stretch.”
Hood got the better of PHC in the FA Cup last weekend, with the teams scheduled to meet again in the league next Sunday at Goose Gosling Field at 6.30pm.
“We’ve been through some ups and downs and losses, probably none that big,” Robinson said. “We still have the same belief and the same fight; it’s not going to be easy for anybody who’s trying to take the league title from us.”
Donavan Thompson netted his 20th goal of the season in all competitions in the FA Cup quarter-finals last weekend and will certainly be a threat to the PHC defence. He was upstaged by team-mate Paul Simons who scored four goals in the X-Roads 5-0 win over St George’s.
Devarr Boyles, the Town coach, makes his return to Bernard Park, having coached North Village last season, hoping to build on their FA Cup triumph over Somerset Trojans.
Boyles singled out Eusebio Blankendal and Jahnazae Swan for their performances in midfield, with Blankendal switching from full back.
The pair combined to give Town the lead, Swan scoring with a glancing header from a Blankendal cross.
“When I first came to the club I said his profile is not a defender, so we just had to wait for the team to evolve and moved him in a position that suits his skill set,” Boyles said. “I’m really happy for Jahnazae because he’s been doing everything right. Today he did the things I have been encouraging him to do.”
Trojans face BAA at Goose Gosling Field, hoping to earn another three points that could lift them off the bottom on goal difference. BAA, promoted last season with Paget Lions, are reasonably comfortable in mid-table. Paget are just three points ahead of the Trojans ahead of their match against Devonshire Cougars at Southampton Oval. The two teams have just two wins apiece in the league.
Hood could lose ground on PHC as they have had their match with Boulevard tomorrow postponed because they have the minimum required four players, goalkeeper Dale Eve, Lejaun Simmons, Tomiko Goater and Jaylon Bather, on international duty. Hood are just three points behind the Zebras.
In the First Division, Southampton Rangers could take another step closer to promotion without kicking a ball as they have a bye this weekend, while second and third-placed Somerset Eagles and Hamilton Parish meet at Wellington Oval.
An Eagles victory would all but secure promotion for Rangers, who are already 15 points ahead of Parish.
In the other matches, Vasco, fresh off their first win of the season, face Ireland Rangers at Bernard Park in a bottom-of-the-table clash. Flanagan’s Onions play Devonshire Colts at Goose Gosling Field while Young Men’s Social Club play St George’s at Police Field and Wolves take on St David’s at Garrison Field.
