Hood did it for ‘Muzzy’
Robin Hood paid a heart-warming tribute to late team member Mazhye Burchall after securing their second straight FA Cup title and third overall at the National Stadium at the weekend.
Burchall died at the age of 20 in a motorcycle crash last September, with his Hood team-mates, as well as those of his former club PHC Zebras dedicated the remainder of their season to the former Bermuda Under-20 player.
“If you look at it, PHC won every other trophy, other than Hood, and Muzzy was a former PHC player and a Hood player so he won them all,” Timmy Figureido, the Hood assistant coach, said.
“We tried to do something special in honour of Muzzy and luckily we did it.”
Hood, who also won a maiden Dudley Eve Trophy title this season, retained their FA Cup title after edging X-Roads 3-2 the final on Sunday. Shakir Smith, Tomiko Goater and Lejaun Simmons netted Hood’s goals while X-Roads replied through Donavan Thompson and Paul Simons.
“We set out to win as much as we could for Muzzy and managed to get our hands on two trophies and his former club PHC got the others,” Steven Simons, the Hood president, said.
“I know he’s definitely smiling upon us and the first stop on our motorcade when we celebrate will be to Muzzy’s memorial spot.”
Simons described Burchall, who scored one of the goals of the tournament for Bermuda Under-20s at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Costa Rica in 2017, as a player who always gave his all.
“Muzzy was always a player you didn’t have to worry about giving one hundred per cent,” he said. “When I’ve been in the locker room and have heard the team talks it’s always, ‘Look man, Muzzy one hundred per cent, let’s do it for him’, so it really drove these guys on.”
