BFA to monitor Robinson assault case

PHC captain Cecoy Robinson

The Bermuda Football Association has taken a wait-and-see approach on the status of Cecoy Robinson as under-17 national coach after he appeared in court yesterday on a charge of assaulting a police officer.

Robinson, who is due to coach the youth team at the Concacaf Under-17 Championship in Bradenton Florida from May 1 to 16, is scheduled to reappear before the courts on May 13.

The BFA said in statement: “The Bermuda Football Association is aware of the incident that occurred at the All-Star Match at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night involving National Academy coach and senior national team player Cecoy Robinson. Cecoy was detained on the night by the Bermuda Police Service and subsequently appeared in court this morning [yesterday].

“The association views this matter very seriously and is gathering information regarding the incident. As the matter is before the courts the association will not make any further comments specific to the incident or the legal proceedings.”

Robinson, the PHC captain, led his club to the Premier Division and Friendship Trophy titles this past season and also played a part in the national team’s successful Concacaf Gold Cup qualifying campaign.

The alleged incident happened less than 24 hours before the BFA announced the squad to represent the island at the Concacaf Under-17 Championship at the IMG Academy campus.

Bermuda will begin their group E campaign against Trinidad on May 1 before facing defending champions Mexico on May 3 and Jamaica on May 5 in their remaining group matches.

Group F includes the United States, Canada, Guatemala and Barbados, with Honduras, Haiti, El Salvador and Guayana making up group G and Costa Rica, Panama, Surinam and Curaçao in group H.

The top three finishers in each of the groups will join the winners of groups A, B, C and D from the qualifier, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico, in the round of 16.

The semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the Under-17 World Cup to be held in Brazil in from September 17 to October 8.
