Leverock scores in Sligo victory

Dante Leverock

Danté Leverock, the Sligo Rovers defender, netted in his team’s 2-0 win away to UCD in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division at Belford last night.

The Bermuda captain opened the scoring in the 54th minute with a header before Regan Donelon’s 80th-minute strike put the game beyond reach.

“A massive three points for us after we were disappointed with the result on the weekend,” Leverock said, alluding to his team’s 1-1 draw at home against bottom side Finn Harps in their previous outing. “Massive credit to the boys. We had a game plan and we executed well. Always a pleasure to score. We’re happy with the clean sheet, which we’ve improved on in recent weeks.”

The win was the fourth of the league campaign for Sligo, who are unbeaten in their past three games and six-points clear of the relegation play-off place.

“We want to start looking up the table, so this result is a stepping stone for that. We have to become consistent,” Leverock added.

Leverock finally made the breakthrough after a quiet first half. The home side failed to clear a corner before Kris Twarderk whipped in a cross that Leverock headed in at the near post.

The goal was the 27-year old’s second in five appearances and third for the season since joining Sligo from Estonian outfit Narva Trans last December.

The visiting side then killed the game off ten minutes from time as Donelon scored straight from a corner after the UCD defence failed to deal with the threat.

Sligo are back in action on Saturday when they face leaders Shamrock Rovers at home.
