Smith released by Oxford

Bermuda striker Jonté Smith

Jonté Smith, the Bermuda striker, is among five players to have been released by Sky Bet League One side Oxford United.

Smith, who signed for Oxford from non-League Lewes until the end of the season in February, made one substitute appearance for the club against Blackpool.

The 24-year-old caught the eye of Oxford’s coaches when he scored a hat-trick against them in a friendly match while on trial at League Two Swindon Town.

He then scored twice for Oxford during a friendly against Championship side Reading before signing a short-term deal.

Oxford, who finished twelfth in the table, have also released striker Jon Obika and defenders Charlie Raglan and Fiacre Kelleher. Back-up goalkeeper Scott Shearer 38, is retiring.

Since being released by Crawley Town in 2014, Smith has had six clubs and played in three different countries.

He had two goal-laden years in Scandinavia at Kemi Kings of Finland and Norwegian side Floy before returning to England in 2015 after joining Gloucester City in the Vanarama National League North.

Smith will likely be part of Bermuda’s squad for the Concacaf Gold Cup next month.

Bermuda face Haiti at the Estadio Nacional in San José, Costa Rica, in their opening game on June 16.

They then play Costa Rica, at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on June 20 before facing Nicaragua at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, on June 24.
