Lewis finds net for Charleston
Zeiko Lewis netted his fifth goal of the season in Charleston Battery’s 3-2 defeat away to Ottawa Fury in the United Soccer League Championship at TD Place Stadium on Wednesday.
Making his first appearance for the USL Eastern Conference side since returning from Bermuda duty in the Concacaf Gold Cup, Lewis came on as a 78th-minute substitute and hit the target six minutes later to level the score at 2-2.
The 25-year-old, who featured in all three of Bermuda’s Gold Cup matches against Haiti, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, played a quick one-two with Angelo Kelly before converting with a tight-finish at the near post.
Lewis’s late strike appeared to have done enough to earn his team a point.
However, Ottawa regained the lead in the 86th minute when Mour Samb swept in the winner from a poorly cleared corner to end Charleston’s three-game unbeaten streak.
Vincenzo Candela gave Charleston the lead in the 20th minute before Carl Haworth, the Ottawa captain, grabbed an equaliser in the 29th and then struck again in the 74th minute to put his team in front.
Charleston are eighth in the standings. They are back in action tomorrow when they host Lewis’s former club New York Red Bulls II at MUSC Health Stadium.
