Thompson completes return to Spain
Kenni Thompson is looking forward to showcasing her talents once again in Barcelona, Spain.
The 18-year-old forward has made a return to the Spanish football scene after joining Primera División side RCD Espanyol Femeni from England’s Chelsea Ladies this week.
“Happy to have signed my first contract with this amazing club @rcdespanyol seven years since leaving home and this is just the beginning! Thompson tweeted.
The teenager previously spent four years in Spain where she had stints with Barcelona, UE Cornellà and Saint Gabriel and also trained with the World Sports Academy Barcelona boys’ programme before joining Chelsea Ladies in 2016.
During her time in Spain she helped Barcelona’s Under-16 girls team to the Spanish Championship title and earned an invitation to participate in regional trials for the Spain Under-16 girls team.
RCD Espanyol Femeni has consolidated itself as one of Spain’s top teams in recent years, particularly in the Copa de la Reina where they share the record for the most wins (six) in the competition with Levante UD.
The club is also regarded as one of the foremost pioneering teams in women’s football in Spain having been established in 1970.
During her stint with Chelsea Ladies Thompson earned a league championship medal with the club’s reserve team.
The daughter of Kenny Thompson, the North Village director of football and former Bermuda midfielder and coach, played an integral role in her team’s title success, scoring four goals in 12 appearances, including two against defending champions Arsenal Ladies.
She made her debut against Bristol City Women and opened her scoring account against Arsenal Ladies.
“Being able to play at a big club like Chelsea is what every footballer dreams of doing,” Thompson said in a previous interview.
“Knowing that world class players are training on pitches near you is a great feeling.
“Also being given the opportunity to train with the ladies first team is huge for me.
Those girls are some of the best in the country and people I would consider to be some of my idols, so training with them is a dream come true. I’ve definitely improved physically as the English game is more demanding. “
RCD Espanyol Femeni finished ninth among the 16-teams in the Primera División last term. The new season runs from September 8 to May 17, 2020.
