Lewis’s performances recognised with award
Zeiko Lewis, the Charleston Battery forward, has been named as player of the month for July by his club’s fans.
The Bermuda international earned the accolade for his outstanding performance in his team’s 3-2 win at Hartford Athletic in the USL Championship last month.
Lewis netted his second goal in three games and sixth of the season from a set piece and also had an assist in a hard-fought win on the road.
It was the only match Charleston played last month due to a vehicular accident involving the team and inclement weather.
“It was a rough month,” Lewis said. “We had many games rescheduled due to an accident and lightning delays so it was hard for us to be mentally and physically game-ready.
“But when we were asked to perform we were ready and up for the task.”
Lewis refuses to take all of the credit for the accolade.
“I’m pleased to be recognised for my individual efforts,” he added. “But if it weren’t for the rest of the team, we would not have been able to get through these hard tasks.”
Lewis had a hand in his team’s goal in a 1-1 draw at Saint Louis FC at West Community Stadium last Saturday night. The 25-year-old supplied the cross which led to Jarad van Schaik’s 37th-minute goal which earned the visitors a first-half lead.
The home side eventually hit back to earn a share of the spoils via Sam Fink’s 68th-minute penalty.
Charleston are presently ninth in the Eastern Conference standings, having taken 27 points from 20 matches.
n Dante Leverock, the Sligo Rovers defender, netted in his team’s biggest win in the FAI Cup at Glebe North last Friday.
The Bermuda captain and his team-mates romped to an emphatic 8-0 win in the lopsided affair at Marker Green.
David Cawley and Kris Twardek led the charge with hat-tricks, with Regan Donelon and Leverock also getting their names on the scoresheet to complete Sligo’s first win in the competition in three years.
