Reggie Lambe, the Cambridge United midfielder, has hailed goalkeeper Callum Burton as the “real hero” in his team’s impressive upset over Sky Bet Championship side at Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Burton produced a pair of saves in a penalty shoot-out to cap a dramatic debut for the Sky Bet League Two side.

“We stayed composed with our spot kicks, but our goalkeeper was really the hero of the shoot-out for me,” said Lambe, who converted during in the shoot-out, which his team won 5-4 at Griffin Park.

Burton, one of several changes manager Colin Calderwood made to his team, also made a string of saves in regulation time.

Cambridge led 1-0 at the break courtesy of an early strike from Marc Richards before Marcus Forss grabbed an equaliser for the home side after half-time.

The visiting side held their nerve in the shoot-out, with Luke Hannant, Lambe Harrison Dunk, Harry Darling and Harvey Knibbs converting.

“It was a very tough match and for us to take the lead so early gave us a platform to hold onto and really dig in and fight to keep the lead,” Lambe added.

“I think we played very well as a team to create good chances and to stop them from threatening our keeper. Their quality really came out late in the match and they began to keep the ball in our half and I think their goal came from relentless pressure.”

Cambridge will face Championship side Swansea City in the second round this month.

Lambe was one of two Bermudians who featured in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday as Nahki Wells’s Queens Park Rangers beat Bristol City also in a penalty-shoot-out.

Burnley striker Wells, who has rejoined QPR on a season-long loan, scored in regulation time and also converted in the shoot-out. QPR will face Portsmouth in the second round.

“Hopefully we can go through to the next round and maybe have a Cambridge versus QPR showdown,” Lambe said.
