Reggie Lambe says Bermuda’s historic victory over Panama in the Concacaf Nations League has done his confidence the world of good.

The Cambridge United midfielder has impressed in his club’s back-to-back victories away to Crewe Alexandra and Mansfield Town in Sky Bet League Two since returning from international duty.

He came off the substitutes’ bench in a 3-2 win over Crewe last Saturday before opening his season’s account from the penalty spot in a 4-0 drubbing of Mansfield, his former team, on Tuesday.

“I have added confidence from a huge victory against Panama in the Nations League, a top nation in the Concacaf region,” said Lambe, who was making his first start since rejoining Cambridge. “To come back and get two wins back-to-back just adds to the momentum, and also to be off the mark for my club is a also a massive boost.”

Lambe played an integral role in Bermuda’s 2-0 triumph over Panama at the Rommel Fernández Stadium on September 8, when he capped a solid display by providing the assist for Nahki Wells’s second goal.

As for the penalty he converted in second-half stoppage time against Mansfield, which completed Cambridge’s romp at Field Mill, Lambe said: “I didn’t want to celebrate too much because I used to play here.

“Sometimes when you come back to your old club, you just try to show a bit respect. And that’s what I did, even though I wanted to celebrate because it’s my first goal of the season.

“When you come to your old team, you can’t really disrespect the fans because some of them still love me here and I know a lot of the coaching staff and stuff like that. So it was good to score, but just keep it calm.”

Cambridge hit four late goals to sink ten-man Mansfield.

The home side dominated the first half before the game turned sharply four minutes after the restart when Matt Preston was dismissed for a reckless tackle on Luke Hannant.

Cambridge dominated from that point and secured the points with Jack Roles, Sam Smith and George Maris finding the net.

Lambe added: “It was a difficult game. But once they got someone sent off, I think we had more time to play and we sort of came out and just passed the ball around. Made them move around and then we got our goals.”

The victory moved Cambridge to eighth in the standings, seven points adrift of leaders Exeter City.

Lambe and his team-mates will host Swindon Town in their next league outing at Abbey Stadium on Saturday.

“It gives us a lot of confidence to get back-to-back wins and to be scoring goals now,” he said. “We just need to take this confidence into the game on Saturday.”
