Donawa seals Darlington’s first away win

Match winner: Justin Donawa

Justin Donawa struck a late dramatic winner against Alfreton to help secure Darlington a first away win this season in the Vanarama National League North.

Building on the momentum of opening his account for the club in a 3-1 victory over Trafford in the FA Cup second-round qualifier last week, the Bermuda midfielder doubled his tally with an even more vital strike, helping to clinch 2-1 success away from home.

Having fallen behind in the third minute, Darlington finally found an equaliser in the 85th minute through Tyrone O’Neill’s powerful header, before Donawa struck just a minute later to complete the turnaround.

The result against seventh-placed Alfreton, left Darlington in 15th place after 12 games, five points adrift of play-off places and eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Nahki Wells and Queens Park Rangers suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Sky Bet Championship table-toppers West Bromwich Albion.

QPR had been looking to secure five consecutive league wins for the first time since 2004, but failed to even register a shot on target as Wells struggled to make an impact on the game.

Teenager Nathan Ferguson opened the scoring with a speculative 30-yard shot after 53 minutes, before QPR’s Yoann Barbet was sent off for bringing down Hal Robson-Kanu in the 82nd minute.

The visitors seized upon their numerical advantage almost immediately with Costa Pereira wrapping up proceedings just two minutes later.

n Reggie Lambe was an unused substitute as Cambridge United stuttered to a 1-1 draw against rock-bottom Stevenage in League Two, while in the same division, national compatriot Jonté Smith was not included in the Cheltenham squad who drew 1-1 with Crewe Alexandra.
