Wells believes the best is still yet to come

On target: Nahki Wells fires home the opening goal in Queens Park Rangers 4-2 victory over Blackburn

Nahki Wells insists he is only just warming up after scoring his seventh goal of the season for Queens Park Rangers and says he has never felt more confident in his finishing ability.

Wells produced an impressive all-round display in his side’s 4-2 win at home to Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday, netting the opener on the half-hour mark with a calm finish.

Despite being only early October, Wells is just two goals shy of his overall tally last season and feels in a “good space” having netted five goals in as many games, including braces against Luton Town and Millwall.

“I’ve been a goal scorer all of my life and know what it feels like to be in a good space,” Wells said.

“I’m happy to be back to where I feel like I’m at my best and playing a big part. Long may that continue.

“I’m feeling as confident as I’ve ever been. I’m in a good team and in good surroundings, and I’m very comfortable.

“This is like home for me. I’m sure we will continue to see the best me.”

Wells, who was substituted in the 82nd minute, believes he is improving all areas of his game under manager Mark Warburton, linking up play intelligently as the lone striker against Blackburn before being paired alongside target man Jordan Hugill during the second half.

“On the back of two disappointing results [against West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff City], it was important we got the victory going into the international break, just to settle us and put us back in a good position,” added Wells, who will join up with Bermuda this week as they prepare to face Mexico in the Concacaf Nations League at home.

“I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet and to have had an influence on us getting the points.

“I think I’m proving that I’m more than just a goal scorer and I’m just trying to continue to have an influence on our attacks.”

Wells returned to the starting line-up against Blackburn, having dropped to the substitutes’ bench in the 3-0 defeat away to Cardiff, with Warburton preferring the extra height and physicality of Hugill as his lone striker.

Although the Bermudian says he is also comfortable ploughing a lone furrow in attack, he believes he can forge a potent strike partnership with Hugill.

“Me and Jordan have played well together; he’s done well by himself, and I’ve proven today I can still score goals by myself,” Wells said.

“If he’s playing, we understand each other; if he’s not, I can link up well with Ilias [Chair] and Ebere [Eze].

“I’ve no doubt that we have the platform for a great partnership. We get on really well and have a good understanding of each other and what we need to do.

“The times we have played together, I think we have shown that.

“Whatever the gaffer decides to go with, I think he will feel confident that we can do the job.”

Since rejoining QPR on a season-long loan from Premier League side Burnley in August, Wells says he has been humbled by the way the supporters have taken him to their hearts.

He says he is determined to repay their “love and support” by scoring a hatful of goals.

“I do feel like a QPR player; I’ve spent more time here than I have at Burnley,” he said.

“I’m really enjoying my time here and the fans have taken to me extremely well.

“They have given me love and support and I’m just trying to repay that by playing as well as I can and showing just why the club brought me back this season.”
