Nesbeth scores first college goal
LeiLanni Nesbeth netted her first goal for Florida State University when she converted the extra-time winner in a 3-2 win over Virginia Tech yesterday.
Freshman Nesbeth, a Bermuda women’s player, scored in the second period of extra time to break the deadlock after Virginia Tech levelled it at 2-2 in the 78th minute.
The home team took the lead in the tenth minute before Florida State equalised in the eighteenth minute, with Deyna Castellanos scoring her eighth goal of the season and 44th of her college career, which moved her into a tie for second on the all-time scoring list at FSU.
Fifth-ranked Florida State took the lead in the 57th minute before 20th ranked Virginia levelled it up 21 minute later to force the game into extra time.
The Seminoles dominated possession in the first period, but it was not until the second period of extra time that Nesbeth netted the winner in the 106th minute to seal her team’s ninth straight win with the first goal of her college career. Nesbeth came on as a second half substitute and played 24 minutes.
In a photograph on the FSU website, Nesbeth is pictured in action, wearing a brace on her left leg. She is still recovering from a knee injury she suffered while playing for Brighton & Hove in England last September while still a student at Bedes School in Sussex. She tore the meniscus cartilage and anterior cruciate ligament in her knee.
Nesbeth, on a full football scholarship, has made five appearances for Florida State this season.
The win was the eleventh of the season for the Seminoles who have two losses. On Sunday they are at home to No 1 University of Virginia.
