Lewis honoured by USL
Zeiko Lewis has been named United Soccer League Player of the Week and took his place also in the league’s Team of the Week.
The Charleston Battery forward received the honour for outstanding performances in his team’s final regular-season matches at home to Memphis 901 and Bethlehem Steel.
Lewis netted and had an assist in a 2-0 win over Memphis. He also had an assist and earned a penalty in an emphatic 5-1 home win over Bethlehem Steel, which clinched Charleston’s place in the Eastern Conference play-off for the twelfth straight year.
“It is a great accomplishment to be selected as player of the week over all the other great players in the league,” the Bermuda winger said. “But I just do whatever I can to help my team come out victorious.
“I’m more so happy the team won our games last week and then continued it with a big play-off win over Ottawa [Fury], which was a big match with a lot of challenges that we had to rise to the occasion. However, we stood firm and did what we needed to do to get the win.”
Charleston beat Ottawa 5-4 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time, with Lewis converting his effort in the penalty shoot-out.
Lewis and his team-mates will now face Nashville in the play-off quarter-finals today.
“We are now focused on Nashville and are willing to put in more effort and determination to win this match as well,” he added.
Lewis is reaping the rewards for an outstanding debut season with Charleston as he has also been chosen as the club’s Offensive Player of the Year.
The 24-year-old netted seven goals during the regular season, opening his goal tally on his club debut against Hartford Athletic, and also had five assists.
“It was a great accomplishment and an honour, of course,” Lewis said. “My job is to create and score goals.”
