Shop window focuses on Wells

Turning heads: Nahki Wells, seen in action for Bermuda against Panama at the National Stadium, is at the centre of transfer speculation in England after a good second loan spell with Queens Park Rangers. Nahki Wells’s scoring form with Queens Park Rangers hasn’t gone unnoticed with Birmingham City, another Sky Bet Championship side, rumoured to be interested in the Bermuda striker.

Reports on British websites suggest bids could come in for Wells during the January transfer window after his scoring exploits during which he netted his ninth goal of the season on Saturday, which equalled his tally for all of last season.

However, Wells has reiterated his desire to stay with QPR permanently as they push for promotion to the Premier League this season. “Yeah, of course,” he responded when the question was put to him by talkSPORT this week.

In his second loan spell at the club, Wells has formed a useful partnership up front with Jordan Hugill. “I’m just taking it one week at a time and I’m just focused on trying to come together and reach the goal that we all want and that’s trying to finish in the play-offs and get promoted because there’s real belief that is possible,” he said.

“Individually, I just want to do as well as I can because that’s going to help to propel us into that position. If I’m doing that, I’m pretty sure the club would want to keep me and an opportunity will present itself.

“But until then, it’s about proving that they brought me back for the right reasons and I’m influential in what they want to do moving forward in the future.”

QPR, who twice blew chances to move into second place in the Championship in late October after a 2-2 draw against Reading and a 3-1 home loss to Brentford, are now tenth in the standings, four points off the play-off places. They drew 2-2 on Saturday with Middlesborough, their fourth straight match without a victory. Birmingham are two points behind them in thirteenth place.

Wells is enjoying his second loan spell at the West London club, although it is uncertain if they will be able to sign him on a permanent deal, as Burnley, according to The Sun newspaper, are looking to offload him for £6 million. The Lancashire club paid Huddersfield Town £5 million for the striker in September 2017.

Wells, 29, who made only substitute appearances for Burnley in the top flight, still harbours ambitions of playing in the Premier League. He helped Huddersfield secure promotion to the Premier League, but was sold to Burnley just months later.

However, opportunities have been hard to come by at Burnley, with Wells joining them while recovering from minor ankle surgery. The form of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood meant that he had limited opportunities to stake a claim for a starting place up front.

“It’s disappointing because I haven’t scored a Premier League goal or haven’t had a real Premier League opportunity,” he said. “It was unfortunate to leave Huddersfield in the way it happened because I was such an influence on why we got promoted.

“Then it led to different things and I left for one reason or another and then I went into a Burnley side that was winning every week, and the strikers in front of me were doing really well.

“I felt that I was doing everything I could on the training ground, but in the limited opportunities it was very difficult to take one and I really didn’t capitalise on that.

“I never really got that crack at the Premier League I thought I deserved. But the dream is not over, of course. I still feel I have the potential and the capabilities to get this club up and still have a crack at the Premier League.”

At QPR, Wells is playing alongside two of the brightest young talents in the Championship in Eberechi Eze and Ilias Chair, who have started to establish themselves this season.

“I’ve played with a lot of young talent and both of them are up there with the best,” Wells added. “They’re both very humble and grounded children that love their football, and they’re showing it week in, week out.

“[Manager] Mark Warburton has put a lot of faith in them to give them the shirt every week and they’re not putting a foot wrong.

“In particular, Eze has been outstanding. Ilias as well, but he’s just not scored as many goals or created as much or assisted as much as Eze. But he’s equally an unbelievable player and a talent this club should be happy to have.”

QPR return from the international break in a televised fixture on November 22 against Fulham, a West London derby.

• The Bermuda Football Association confirmed yesterday that the Robin Hood-Devonshire Cougars match has been postponed because of Hood having four players on international duty. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-table First Division clash between joint leaders Devonshire Colts and St George’s Colts has been switched from Police Field to Devonshire Rec, starting at 12.30pm. Police Field is the nominated home ground for both Devonshire Colts and Young Men’s Social Club but has not hosted any football matches this season.
