Cougars out to derail Hood’s title hopes

Vance Brown, the Cougars coach

Robin Hood will continue their pursuit of the Premier Division title when they host Devonshire Cougars in a make-up game in the Premier Division tonight.

A victory would lift second-place Hood above North Village, the league leaders, by one point. However, Cougars, who sit third in the table, are on a great run of form, winning four of their last seven games in all competitions. They finished runners-up in the Friendship Trophy, losing 1-0 to Southampton Rangers at Wellington Oval on New Year’s Day.

Vance Brown, the Cougars coach, has emphasised the importance of this game for the club’s morale.

“Every game is important, but this one even more so, given we are playing one of the best team’s on the island,” Brown said.

“We have some quality players, and I want them to show off their skills in the next few games,” Brown added.

Following the make-up game, Cougars face their previous league opponents, Village, in the FA Cup first round.

Brown points out that his players must be ready for the tricky week ahead.

“We must be switched on and ready,” he said. “Both these games are massive, in their own unique ways. I am going try and motivate my team with a positive mindset.”

Despite falling in the Friendship Trophy final, Cougars are still alive on two fronts, the league and FA Cup, and Brown believes the Friendship Trophy loss will actually help them going forward.

“The form from Friendship results has given us great confidence for the rest of the season, and we must build on that momentum,” Brown said.

Hood are the epitome of consistency. They have finished in the top two of the Premier Division in each of the past four seasons, and could become the first side since Somerset Trojans in 1987 to achieve that feat in five consecutive campaigns.

They also have a tough FA Cup first-round match this weekend, a rematch with their opponents last season, Somerset Eagles, who they beat 4-1.

Tonight’s match at Goose Gosling Field kicks off at 9pm.
