Wells strikes as QPR topple Leeds

Keeping them quiet: Nahki Wells scored against Leeds

Nahki Wells continued his rich vein of form after scoring his fourteenth goal of the season in Queens Park Rangers’ 1-0 win over Leeds United in the Sky Bet Championship yesterday.

Wells’s controversial first-half goal earned the home side all three points over a Leeds side that finished with ten men after Kalvin Phillips’s late dismissal.

Leeds were left fuming after Eberechi Eze’s free kick hit both of Wells’s arms before he tapped into the net from close range in the 20th minute.

Mark Warburton, the QPR manager, said: “We were good in the first half and I thought we deserved the lead at half-time.

“We got too deep in the second half and invited them onto us. They’re a very good team and we rode our luck a bit.

“But so much credit to the players and the way they stood up, to a man. Leeds are a highly talented team.

“So much pleasure was taken by the players from today’s performance because that type of game, defensively, you do have to stand up.

“Sometimes you do have to win ugly. Today you saw a QPR team that have won nice games but this time won in ugly fashion. That’s heartening for all of us.”

Goalkeeper Nathan Trott’s AFC Wimbledon enjoyed a 1-0 win at home to Peterborough United in League One thanks to a second-half goal from Joe Pigott. Meanwhile, Reggie Lambe was an unused substitute in Cambridge United’s 4-0 defeat at home to Stevenage in League Two.

In the Vanarama National North League, Justin Donawa, the Bermuda forward, scored in the 90th minute in Darlington’s 3-0 win at home to Alfreton Town.

The win moves Darlington to seventh place in the table. Osagi Bascome, the Bermuda midfielder, was an unused substitute.

Also in the National League North, midfielder Milan Butterfield played the full 90 minutes in Kidderminster Harriers’ 1-1 draw at home to Spennymoor Town.
