Wells reflects on ‘weird’ City debut
Nahki Wells spoke of the “weird feeling” of making his Bristol City debut in a 1-0 victory over former club Queens Park Rangers in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday.
Wells came on as a 63rd-minute substitute at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, as City held on for victory to consolidate their place in the top six, courtesy of Famara Diedhiou’s sixteenth-minute diving header.
The Bermuda forward joined Lee Johnson’s side from Burnley on Thursday for a fee in the region of £5 million after spending the last 18 months on loan with QPR.
“A great debut, coming in and getting a win against my former side,” Wells, who spurned a good opportunity to score immediately after coming on, told the club’s YouTube channel. “Happy and over the moon, but the most important thing was the three points.
“It was great to come on and get a good reception from QPR fans and equally get a huge reception from the Bristol fans was great.
“It was a weird feeling, emotion running through me heading into today, but the main focus was to do the best I can for Bristol City.”
Elsewhere, Reggie Lambe was an unused substitute as manageress Cambridge United fought back to record a stunning late 2-1 victory over Colchester United in Sky Bet League Two.
Luke Norris looked to have secured the points with his headed opener in the 67th minute.
However, Cambridge equalised five minutes from time through substitute Andrew Dallas, before fellow substitute Harvey Knibbs completed a remarkable comeback a minute later to earn the home side their first win of the year.
In the same division, Jonté Smith was not included in the Cheltenham Town squad that moved into play-off places after securing a 2-1 win over visiting side Morcambe.
Conor Thomas and Alfie May gifted Cheltenham a two-goal first-half advantage with A-Jay Leitch-Smith a consolation six minutes from time.
Milan Butterfield played a full 90 minutes as his Kidderminster Harriers side stunned Vanarama National League North leaders King’s Lynn in a 2-0 victory.
First-half goals from Alex Prosser and Ashley Chambers helped Harriers halt a five-game winless run.
In the same division, Justin Donawa’s Darlington dropped out of the play-off places after a 3-0 defeat at home to Guiseley.
Hamza Bencherif gave the visitors a 1-0 half-time lead with Aram Soleman adding a second-half brace.
