Wells named Championship Player of the Month

Top performer: Nahki Wells

Nahki Wells says he is “honoured” to have been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for the first time after his outstanding form last month.

The Bermuda striker netted five goals, including a hat trick against Cardiff, in three appearances while on loan at Queens Park Rangers.

“It’s my first player of the month award in the Championship and I’m very honoured,” said Wells, who joined Bristol City from Burnley for £4 million in the January transfer window and made his home debut in the 3-1 defeat to Birmingham yesterday.

“I’d like to thank the QPR management and players for helping me achieve this and I’m now looking forward to the next stage of the season with Bristol City.”

Wells’s season-long loan spell at QPR ended last week after being recalled by parent club Burnley before his switch to Bristol City.

He is the second Bermudian to join City after Shaun Goater, who netted 45 goals in 81 appearances for the club from 1996 to 1998.

Coincidentally, the 29-year-old striker made his debut for City against QPR two days later.

“I’m pleased for Nahki,” Lee Johnson, the City manager, said. “He had a great first half of the season while he was at QPR and his performances last month merited this award.

“We hope he continues that good form in a Bristol City shirt.”

Wells’s outstanding form also earned him a place in the Championship Team of the Month for January along with City team-mates Daniel Bentley, Nathan Baker, Jay Dasilva and Jamie Paterson.

Wells came on as a 58th minute substitute during the league defeat at home to Birmingham.

The hosts got off to a flying start as Jamie Paterson capitalised on Marc Roberts’s weak back-pass to round goalkeeper Lee Camp and give Lee Johnson’s side the lead after just 43 seconds.

However, they found themselves 2-1 behind by half-time.

Scott Hogan equalised after Dan Bentley had saved Jeremie Bela’s powerful effort, before the visitors took the lead when a right-wing cross from 16-year-old Jude Bellingham was glanced into his own net by Andreas Weimann at the near post.

Wells’s introduction did little to turn the tide as Lukas Jutkiewicz wrapped up the victory in stoppage time.

Sixth-placed Bristol City would have gone third and within three points of leaders West Bromwich Albion had they won.
