Trojans awarded win after Rangers brawl
Somerset Trojans have been awarded a 3-0 victory over Southampton Rangers by the Bermuda Football Association after the Premier Division match was abandoned this month.
The three points has guaranteed Trojans’ top-flight survival, moving them up to fifth place and four points above the drop zone with one game remaining. Rangers remain one point and one place above relegation.
The game at Somerset Cricket Club on March 11 was called off in the 65th minute because of a brawl involving the visiting side’s players and fans.
Rangers were leading 1-0 courtesy of a second-half penalty by Kamali Davis.
The ruling is in accordance with the BFA’s Divisional Rule of the Competition, which states: “In all cases where the Committee is satisfied that a game has been abandoned owing to the conduct of one team or membership organisation or its/their members, fans, or any spectators attending the match they shall award the points and a score of 30 for the game to its opponents and take what other action they may deem necessary.
“In the event that the offending team is losing by a score that is greater than 3-0 at the time of the abandonment, the Committee shall record the score at the time of the abandonment.”
The BFA suspended all football on the island because of the Covid-19 outbreak on March 19 and were scheduled to further discuss the matter today.
The announcement arrived on the same evening as Bermuda confirmed its first cases of coronavirus and three days before the final round of the domestic league season.
