Lewis bags brace for Battery
Bermuda winger Zeiko Lewis put in a man-of-the-match display as his brace helped Charleston Battery overturn a two-goal deficit in a 3-2 victory over Atlanta United II in the USL Championship yesterday.
As they have in their previous two matches, Battery were forced to rally from behind and went into the interval 1-0 down with Macky Diop slotting home a cross beyond goalkeeper Phil Breno.
Things went bad to worse for Bettery after the restart as Atlanta doubled their advantage in 51st minute with Efrain Morales reacting quickest to prod home the rebound after Breno made a smart save.
However, the tide turned in the space of just two minutes, six minutes later with Mauro Cichero reducing the deficit before Lewis drew his side level, turning brilliantly inside the area before slotting the ball past Lundgaard.
With the clock winding down there was still time for one more dramatic twist as Battery snatched victory. A cross from the right-hand side found AJ Paterson in the area who kept his composure to slide the ball across the box to Lewis who had the simplest of taks of rolling the ball into the net to complete the turnaround.
“I made my run and I just had to make sure I put it on target from AJ’s pass,” Lewis said on his dramatic winner.
The victory put Battery in second-place in Group H and firmly in play-off contention ahead of a trip to North Carolina on Wednesday.
