Hood respond admirably to down Eagles
Robin Hood 4 Somerset Eagles 1
Robin Hood picked up their second league victory of the campaign as they beat Somerset Eagles 4-1 at Goose Gosling Field last night. After falling behind in the first half to an opportunistic goal from Nathan Rego, the men in green collected themselves and score four unanswered to cruise to a comfortable win.
Coach John Barry Nusum was happy with the result and his team’s response to the early setback. “We found ourselves in a very similar situation as we were in midweek against North Village, being a goal down fairly early in the match,” Nusum said. “Part of the problem was that we were rushing our attacks, looking to go directly towards goal every time.
“Once we settled down and became a little more patient in our build-up, we started to create the opportunities that we were looking for and were eventually able to convert a few.”
Hood had the better of the possession in the opening periods, when most of their attacks were down the flanks. They had a good opportunity in the 20th minute when a ball fell to Aaron Nelson from a set-piece. The forward seemed not to realise that he was onside and, in his surprise, hesitated to pull the trigger. The ball was eventually cleared.
Eagles were causing some problems of their own through the pace of Samori Greenidge-Saltus and Rego, and it would be the latter who was rewarded in the 27th minute. Hood goalkeeper Jahquil Hill’s attempted clearance of a through-ball deflected off his own defender and into the path of Rego, who was left with the simple task of scoring into an empty net.
The lead would not last very long, though, with a goalkeeping error at the other end gifting Hood their equaliser. Jermaine Rumley’s attempted pass was picked off by Justin Corday, whose subsequent shot was redirected into goal by the boot of Deion Woolridge.
Corday put his team ahead just before the half, with a well-struck free kick from the corner of the box that surprised Rumley, who was clearly expecting a cross from that angle.
After the interval, Hood took control of the match and it was only a matter of time before they would extend their lead. They did so when Ereico Outerbridge was on hand to put home the rebound when Tomeko Goater’s shot came back off a post.
Jaylon Bather got in on the action to put the match out of Eagles’ reach on the hour mark when he headed from a corner at the back post.
