Footy Kings claim precious scalp
St David’s 2 Footy Kings 5
Ralph Bean Jr looked at home at his former ground at Bernard Park as he helped Footy Kings of the Corona League inflict an upset over First Division side St David’s in the FA Cup preliminary round yesterday.
Bean and Marcus Johnson both scored two goals as experience prevailed in the end with three goals in the last 16 minutes separating the two teams.
The win was the first in the cup for Footy Kings after three previous losses in the same round, but now they can look to the first-round draw with some interest as they await the 11 Premier Division teams in the next round, which is scheduled for January 16 and 17.
Aquino Grant gave Footy Kings the lead from the penalty spot in the seventh minute before St David’s turned the match around with two goals in the 23rd and 28th minutes through Zachary Morris and Keijon Butterfield to take a 2-1 lead.
Johnson levelled it up at 2-2 in the 40th minute when he scored past Mikkail Crockwell at the far post after a half-clearance from a corner.
Footy Kings continued to look the more threatening in the second half, with St David’s let off when Grant wasted a good opportunity after Bean laid on a good pass to him on the edge of the box.
Kings continued to dominate with Bean then taking matters into his own hands with a goal in the 74th minute after taking a pass outside the box and shrugging off a challenge before shooting into the far corner.
In the 85th minute Bean made it 4-2 from the penalty spot after he had been fouled inside the box, with the offender, Chris Wellman, shown a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity.
Johnson closed out the scoring in the 90th minute when a cross along the goalline by Jesse Seymour was met at the far post.
“It was a good game, this was our fourth time around so to finally get to the next round as a Corona League team we’re very excited,” said Vinzie Zuill, the Footy Kings coach.
“We played St George’s twice and then Vasco, and we never won to get to the next round. Now we’re through and looking forward to it.
“We’re packed with experience and it showed today. ‘Gumbo’ stepped up and led from the front. We do have a bit of work to do before the next round, but we’re up for the test.”
Hamilton Parish 4 Ireland Rangers 1
Shane Hollis and Jordan Outerbridge both netted braces as Hamilton Parish came from behind to beat Ireland Rangers at Southampton Oval yesterday.
Parish were forced to chase the game when Duante Woods slotted home to earn Rangers a third minute lead after the former’s defence failed to deal with a long ball played in their box.
But despite of the early setback, Sergio Goater’s team eventually settled into a groove and were back on even terms when Hollis scored in the fourteenth minute with a shot from inside of the area to cap a fluent foray into the attacking third.
Outerbridge then put Parish ahead for good when he scored in similar fashion in the 39th minute and added a second in the 53rd minute that virtually put the match beyond Rangers’ reach.
Hollis then capped Parish’s convincing win in spectacular fashion when he volleyed home from 25 yards out with the last kick of the match.
“We made hard work out of it, but we got the job done in the end,” Goater, the Parish coach, said.
“Defensively, I think we were a bit suspect in the first half because we didn’t deal with the first ball enough. But, second half, I felt we did a lot more and then the goals came.
“We were confident we could get the job done going into the match. We just had to settle and once they did, they started moving the ball around and then it all worked in our favour.”
YMSC 4 Wolves 2
Young Men’s Social Club advanced into the next round with this come-from-behind victory over Wolves at Police Field.
YMSC controlled the opening stages of the game but it would be Wolves to take the lead, albeit against the run of play, with the goal of the game when Kyle Brangman hit a sizzling volley from the edge of the box that left Ryan Evans grasping at fresh air as it sailed past him into the roof of the net.
This would serve as a wake-up call for YMSC, who would equalise minutes later when Giniko Butterfield ran on to a long ball to hit a side-footed lob over Wolves goalkeeper Jerome Usher and into the net. YMSC took the lead just before the break when Nique Armstrong’s square pass was sliced into his own net by defender Antoine Brangman.
Midway through the second half, Wolves tied the score when Torry Davis’s low free kick made its way through a maze of players in the box to nest in Evans’s left-hand corner.
YMSC never panicked and kept applying pressure on the Wolves defence. K’Tori Butterfield pressured Jovon Minors to make a desperate clearance only for the ball to slice off his boot and go back towards goal, where the striker beat Usher to the ball to head into the net.
Social Club closed the scoring in stoppage time when substitute Ezekiel Lewis tapped in with his first touch from a Butterfield cross to send the bench into wild celebration.
• In the remaining cup-tie, Vasco beat Boulevard 4-3. No other information was made available.
