Dale Eve’s penalty heroics help Spennymoor move up to third in Vanarama North
Bermuda goalkeeper Dale Eve saved a second-half penalty to cap a commanding performance and lead Spennymoor Town to a 2-0 win away to Southport today in the Vanarama National League North.
Goals from Adam Blakeman and Glen Taylor put Spennymoor two up at the half but they had to withstand a withering assault from the home side to record their first away win of the season.
Central to that was Eve, who was determined to keep a clean sheet and stepped up large with 12 minutes left and Southport on top when Blakeman fouled Niall Watson and the referee pointed to the spot after consultation with his assistant.
Spennymoor displaced Southport in third with the victory at Merseyrail Community Stadium, and are six points behind leaders Gloucester City, who were held to a sensational 4-4 draw by Bradford Park Avenue.
Chesterfield beaten
One tier up in the National League, Milan Butterfield’s Chesterfield surrendered a half-time lead and lost 2-1 at home to form team Maidenhead United.
Scott Boden had given Chesterfield a lead on the half-hour, but Maidenhead, who have now won five straight in the league, bounced back with a double from Sam Barratt in the 54th and 71st minutes.
Butterfield played the full 90 minutes in central midfield for Chesterfield, who remain in nineteenth place in the 24-team league on six points from seven matches.
Maidenhead move up to fourth.
