Nahki Wells has yet to rule out playing for Bermuda in the World Cup qualifiers.

Bermuda are scheduled to begin their campaign with a match away to Canada on March 25 before hosting Aruba at the National Sports Centre on March 30. They will then face Surinam and Cayman Islands in their remaining group qualifying matches.

However, because of uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 restrictions, it remains unclear whether the upcoming fixtures will go ahead as planned, with the Bermuda Football Association refusing all media requests for clarification.

In any case, Wells is keen to play his part in helping the national football team achieve their immediate objectives.

“I’ve said it many times I still have aspirations of playing for my country as I feel I have so much to offer,” the Bristol City striker told The Royal Gazette. “I haven’t ruled myself out as of yet, but of course it has to make sense.

“At the moment it’s so much uncertainty; where games are being played, whether they are going to be able to be played, whether there’s going to be quarantine periods, whether it’s quarantine periods coming back to England.

“I’m not even thinking that far because it’s no light at the end of the tunnel, enough understanding yet, and until then I don’t have a decision to make.

“But hopefully I‘d still like to represent my country, still like to play my part. But it does, of course, all have to make sense and not have too much impact on my club career. Hopefully, fingers crossed, everything aligns itself correctly.

“I still want to come back and play for my country and still want to have another go at the World Cup campaign and what it takes to try and get to the Gold Cup. Those are my main short-term objectives as an international player.”

Meanwhile, Wells and his City team-mates have found the going tough lately in the Sky Bet Championship.

A 2-0 league defeat at home to Reading on Tuesday came at a great cost for manager Dean Holden, who was immediately relieved of his duties after only seven months at the helm.

“Of course, sad to see the manager go, a person who I feel has been fantastic,” Wells said.

“When I joined he was an assistant manager at the time. He then took on the managerial role and he was great.”

Five successive league defeats have left City fourteenth in the Championship standings, ten points adrift of the play-off places.

“We know we have to improve,” Wells said. “We have been very poor defensively and equally as poor going forward, and it’s been very little positives to take from recent performances, of course. There’s no hiding around the fact that there needs to be improvement everywhere.”

Despite the poor run of form, Wells is optimistic that his team’s fortunes will ultimately take a turn for the better and hasn’t given up hope of securing a spot in the play-offs.

”At Bristol there are always aspirations of trying to get promoted, and at the moment things look very difficult,” he said.

“We would be wrong to say that it’s impossible to get into the play-offs because mathematically it’s still possible, but it’s a big ask. It’s important at this moment to just take it one game at a time.

“The reality is we just need to do better than what we have been doing, and try and change something.

“It’s a clear lack of confidence among the squad and it’s really only going to take ourselves to get out of that, and what better chance to start that than on Saturday against Barnsley.

“I’m still confident that we can perform significantly better than we are, and I’m sure we will.”
