Warwick Archers once again showed their supremacy at youth level as they clinched two titles in an action packed day of Appleby Youth Knockout Cup finals at the Flora Duffy Stadium on Saturday.

The opening game of the day, the under-13 ‘B’ Final, saw Somerset Trojans and FC Bascome Gold go head-to-head.

A very scrappy first half came to life with Bascome scoring the opener in the 25th minute. Rajee Knights-Rowling slotted home from the spot after his powerful strike hit the hand of Tyree Fubler.

Bascome sealed their only title of the day when Jack Fisher played a ball through for Christian Piney, but his effort was saved by Aiden Jones. Tom Hyland pounced on the loose ball and slotted the rebound into an empty net to wrap up a 2-0 victory.

Patrick Dill was voted most valuable player for Somerset, while Jack Fisher was named MVP for the winners, FC Bascome.

The under-13 ‘A’ Final saw Dandy Town prevail in a thrilling encounter as they overcame Warwick Archers 5-4 on penalties, after the match ended 2-2 in regulation time.

Midway through that first period, Archers opened the scoring from poor communication by Dandy Town. Keori Binns-Leverock was played through, and his effort was well saved by Curtis Jackson, but they failed to clear the loose ball and Syhon Goater scored from the rebound.

Town levelled just before the break, after Stasio Rayner-Weller floated in a free-kick, and Azende Trott-Smith turned past his defender and fired a low effort past Sam Larrett.

In first-half stoppage time, Archers took the lead again. This time, Amari Smith smashed an unstoppable long-range free kick past Jackson.

Town equalised for the second time midway through the second half. A corner was only headed into the path of Kennahz Fray, who drove a deflected effort into the near post past Larrett.

Neither side could break the other down in the final minutes, so the first penalty shoot-out of the day ensued. Neither side could settle the spoils after five regulation efforts, with Larrett making two saves and Jackson one, resulting in sudden death.

Goater struck the crossbar on the eighth kick for Archers, but Larrett made a diving save from Jayshun Headlum to keep them in it.

Jackson then saved from Kristian Davis to give Town the upper hand, which Raymond Russell took advantage of to secure Hornets their title in dramatic fashion.

Keori Binns-Leverock was named MVP for the spirited effort of Archers. Jackson, for his clutch save, won the accolade for the victorious Hornets.

The under-15 final between Warwick Archers and FC Bascome proved another entertaining affair as the former came out on top of another penalty shoot-out, winning 5-4 following another 1-1 draw.

Archers controlled the territory for large portions of the first half, as they looked to press FC Bascome back and win possession higher up the pitch.

After a tense goalless first half, Archers finally opened the scoring on the hour mark, when a corner was poorly cleared and Nayan Grant rifled his effort into the top-corner.

Bascome drew level in the closing stages, when Joseph drove into the area before cutting back for Jutore Burgess to slot home.

Another shoot-out was required to settle the encounter.

Keyan Wbb made a solid save to deny Trott, the only missed kick for Bascome but Archers scored all five of their regulation shots to win their title of the evening.

Henry was nominated MVP for Archers, while Burgess won the accolade for Bascome.

The final match of the evening, the under-17 Final, Warwick Archers proved too strong for Somerset Trojans in a convincing 7-0 victory.

Archers showed their superiority from the first whistle. Daniel Cook, who also plays in the Robin Hood senior team, fired a low effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after Tajai Goater laid it off, inside three minutes.

A convincing first half ensued, with Archers scoring additional goals from Goater, Andre Mussenden, Ande Simmons, and a thunderous strike by Cook for his second.

Though Somerset did increase the pressure the second half, they were still pegged back by goals from Niyan Outerbridge and a third from Cook, this time a beautifully curled free-kick from just outside the area.

As his performance and impact suggested, Cook was the obvious MVP choice for Archers while Kymani McNeil was handed the award for Trojans.

“We couldn’t contain them [Archers] in the first half,” Paul Fisher, Trojans assistant coach said. “By the time we discussed changes at half-time, it was too late.”

Archers head coach Richard Todd was delighted with the result, as well as his team’s application on the night.

“Trojans have been our toughest competitor this season,” he said. “We killed them off early, so it was easier to close them out in the second half.”
