Prolific Frantzdy Pierrot one to watch for Haiti

Frantzdy Pierrot tops a strong squad named by Haiti head coach Jean-Jacques Pierre to face Bermuda in their opening Concacaf Nations League group B encounter today.

The powerful forward is a familiar foe to Kyle Lightbourne and his squad after he struck an 11-minute first-half hat-trick the previous time the sides met as Haiti romped to a 4-1 victory in the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifying second round last July.

Pierrot, who scored 15 goals in 34 matches this season for Guingamp in Ligue 2 in France, was initially a doubt for the match after not joining up with the rest of the squad for a training camp in the Dominican Republic as he stayed behind to negotiate his club future.

However, he is with the squad and should be in contention to be among one of the first names on Pierre’s teamsheet.

Another initial uncertainty for the trip was central defender Carlens Arcus, who like Pierrot, missed the training camp to remain in France in an attempt to settle his future with Auxerre. However, the head coach has since confirmed that the 25-year-old, who has been capped 25 times, has been listed among his squad.

One notable omission is former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Duckens Nazon. The 28-year-old, who scored the fourth goal in the previous encounter between the sides and also plays in the French second tier for Quevilly-Rouen, was surprisingly not selected, despite scoring 26 goals in 50 appearances for his nation.

Despite his absence, Pierre can lean on vast experience within his squad, including defenders Mechack Jérôme, capped 78 times, and Alex Junior Christian (38 caps), as well as forward Derrick Étienne, who has five goals to his name from 34 appearances.

Only one member of the squad plays domestically in Haiti, with the rest boasting overseas experience in nations such as France, Portugal, Poland, United States and Canada.
