St David’s and Paget settle for a share of spoils
St David’s Warriors 2 Paget Lions 2
Super-sub Jamori Jones-Tyrell came off the bench to rescue a point for St David’s Warriors in an exciting First Division contest at Lord’s on Saturday.
The striker came on as an 89th minute replacement for Ari Cannonier and netted his team’s equaliser in second-half stoppage time.
With the clock ticking down, Paget were penalised for a contentious foul just outside of their own box and from the resulting free kick, goalkeeper Chiquon Smith rushed off his line to punch away Kalin Richardson’s chip into the area but the loose ball fell to the feet of Jones-Tyrell, who slotted home his fourth goal in two outings.
The striker’s late heroics dashed Paget’s hopes for victory after player-coach Antwan Russell gave them the lead for the second time in the match in the 77th minute.
Russell was left unattended at the far post and took his chance superbly after connecting with Rakeem DeShields’s diagonal pass over the top with a first-time lob that left St David’s goalkeeper Shomori Fox clutching at thin air.
Paget had earlide made a perfect start when Dion Stovell opened the scoring in the fifth minute with another well-taken goal. The experienced forward controlled the ball inside the box with his back to goal before turning and chipping Fox with an exquisite finish.
St David’s levelled in the 25th minute after Oyinde Bascome tapped in Christen Lugo-Elibox’s cross from close range to leave the teams level at the interval.
The see-saw battle was the first of back-to-back meetings between the teams who will also face off in the First Division Shield semi-final at Bernard Park on December 27.
