Title challengers PHC and St George’s meet in crunch clash
Leaders PHC Zebras and fellow contenders St George’s Colts will square off in an exciting Premier Division clash at PHC Field tonight (8pm) that could go a long way towards determining one of the closest title races in recent memory.
The hosts hold a one-point advantage over second-place Devonshire Cougars with visiting St George’s a further point adrift in third.
Both teams will be keen to come away with the points and make further inroads in their bid for league supremacy in the third meeting between them this season.
PHC have a psychological edge over their rivals, having beaten them 3-2 in the first league encounter last November and 3-0 in the Friendship Trophy quarter-finals a month later.
However, despite his team’s recent dominance over their opponents, captain Marco Warren is not taking them for granted.
“The young team that St George’s have is always full of energy and has got experience in Jonté Smith” he said.
“They have a really well-rounded team and a lot of attacking firepower, so you can’t take them lightly.”
Jarreau Hayward, the St George’s coach, says his team is up for the match as they seek to stay on course for a maiden Premier Division title.
“We are looking forward to the clash with PHC,” he said. “The mood in the camp is awesome and I am sure both teams will show up to play.
“I know we will create some challenges for PHC and show up for the occasion. We are hungry for success and I know our real fans are right behind us.”
Tonight’s league clash will be the first meeting between the two sides in five days as they will do battle again in the FA Cup semi-finals at Devonshire Recreation Club on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Cougars will likewise be keen to keep their title bid on track when they host mid-table Hamilton Parish at Devonshire Recreation Club tomorrow (6.30pm).
The title race remains wide open with three games left and only three points separating leaders PHC from fourth-place North Village.
“I don’t recall a season where with three matches to play there are four teams within three points of each other,” Kenny Thompson, the Village coach, said. “As far as excitement goes, it’s great for the league.”
St George’s counterpart Hayward agrees.
“I think it’s the most exciting title race that I can remember,” he said. “It goes to show the level of football on the island right now.”
Tomorrow’s remaining top-flight matches see Village take on Boulevard at Bernard Park while dethroned champions Dandy Town host Somerset Trojans at Goose Gosling Field.
Boulevard and Trojans are in a battle to avoid relegation with already relegated Robin Hood who lost 5-2 to X-Roads on Thursday night.
Boulevard are second from bottom with Trojans just above them three points from safety.
Meanwhile, the First Division title and promotion race is just as close with only four points separating leaders BAA from fifth-place Devonshire Colts.
BAA, who hold a one-point advantage over second-place Paget Lions, host lowly St David’s Warriors at Goose Gosling Field tonight (9pm).
Colts host Paget at Police Field tomorrow where both sides will be keen to bolster their title hopes in a match where neither can afford any slip ups.
Fourth-place Wolves host lowly Ireland Rangers at Wellington Oval while third-place Young Men’s Social Club have a bye.
Tomorrow’s remaining second-tier fixture sees bottom team Somerset Eagles hosting Southampton Rangers at White Hill Field.
