Teenager Bobby Pointon has a burning desire to follow in the footsteps of his idol Nahki Wells and make a name for himself at Bradford City.

The lifelong City fan grew up watching the Bermudian striker during his highly successful three-year stint at Valley Parade, where he notched 53 goals in 91 appearances.

“I used to love Nahki Wells. I copied his boots, the way he walked, I had his name on the back of my shirt, everything,” Pointon told the Telegraph & Argus.

“He was a right player for us and is still doing well now. It just shows that he was quality when he was here.

“Just watching him at Valley Parade was brilliant. All the fans loved him and he scored loads of goals for us.

“I went to Wembley twice and he scored in the 3-0 win against Northampton. That was a good day out.”

Wells became the first Bermudian to play in a major English cup final when he and his fellow Bradford team-mates reached the 2012-13 League Cup final, which the League Two side lost 5-0 against Premier League opponents Swansea City.

The final was played at the new Wembley Stadium, making Wells the first Bermudian to play at the iconic venue.

Wells ended his career at Bradford after signing for Huddersfield Town for a club record fee and hit the ground running by scoring the winner against Millwall less than 24 hours after joining the Sky Bet Championship side.

He is now plying his trade with Championship side Bristol City, who he joined in January 2020 for £4 million, and has gone on to score 30 goals in all competitions since.

The 33-year-old has impressed during the club’s pre-season preparations, bagging four-goals in their 8-0 demolition of League Two side Newton County in a friendly last weekend.

Pointon is also making strides in trying to force his way into Bradford City’s first team, which is managed by former Manchester United striker Mark Hughes.

The 19-year-old gained valuable experience during loan spells with non-league sides Brighouse, Farsley and Liversedge last season and continues to impress Hughes on the training pitch.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for him [Hughes] and where he’s been,” Pointon added. “I take in every bit of advice he gives me and try to add it to my game.

“The gaffer loves quality and mastering the basics. I’m trying to do that as much as possible and show off what I can do. Hopefully it’s paying off.”
