Young Men’s Social Club got a taste of what life may be like for them in the Premier Division this season after they were heavily beaten in the Dudley Eve Trophy group stages on Saturday night.

In a tough opening assignment against last season’s FA Cup winners North Village, who have already lifted silverware this campaign after beating PHC 2-0 in the Charity Cup, Young Men’s Social Club found the net just once through Malique Wilson.

Village, who will be looking to mount a serious attempt on the Premier Division title, will not be lacking for goals this season given new signing De’Andre Wainwright has hit the ground running.

Wainwright, 23, who signed from Somerset Trojans in the summer, netted a first-half hat-trick here to follow up his stunning free kick in the Charity Cup last week, and is pleased with how life at Village has started.

“I chose Village because of the atmosphere and team around me,” he said.

“I don’t have to do too much and they will certainly help my development.”

Wainwright has high ambitions for this campaign as he attempts to build his career after a recent stint with Redcar Athletic in the UK.

“I want to score as many goals as I can this season and win the golden boot,” he said.

“I also want to contribute to my team as much as possible.”

Wainwright opened the scoring in the 18th minute from a sweeping attack, with Jaizel Smith-DeShields picking out Jordan Outerbridge in acres of space on the left side, and the wing-back squaring for the former Somerset Trojans striker to sidefoot into the near post.

Less than three minutes later, Village doubled their advantage when Callon Woolridge’s deflection looped high into the night sky, and Wainwright took it down beautifully in his stride before firing an unstoppable effort high into the roof of the net past goalkeeper Ryan Evans.

Village became complacent in the 15 minutes after their second goal, and Social Club capitalised to get back into the game.

Menelik Rudo played a good pass wide to David Jones, who skilfully dribbled past his man and cut back for Malique Wilson to tap home past stand-in goalkeeper Pierre Smith, deputising for regular keeper Detre Bell who is overseas with the Bermuda national team.

Village regained control after a short period of end-to-end frantic play. Captain Tre Ming, who came out of retirement to rejoin his boyhood club, continued to pull the strings from a deep-lying midfield role, and picked a driven pass for Smith-DeShields, who laid off for Wainwright just inside the penalty area.

The striker dribbled into the area and was taken down by Woolridge with nine minutes of normal time remaining in the first half. Referee Stefan Maybury pointed to the spot. Wainwright picked himself up and calmly curled the ball into the left corner past Smith to complete his hat-trick and restore Village’s two-goal cushion, which they would hold until the break.

Village were able to pass through Social Club’s attempted pressure at will in the second half and they made it four when Ming found the open London Steede-Jackson, who in turn picked out Smith-Deshields to finish with the outside of his boot into the near post.

Village were toying with Social Club by this stage and scored a fifth after each side had made their first substitutions.

Young star Adio Deshields-Tankard, who had replaced Jaizel Smith-Deshields a few minutes earlier, scored midway through the second half after Daion Swan-DeSilva drove past Teron Butterfield to the byline and cut back for him to beat Evans from just inside the penalty area.

Tankard would score his second of the game 14 minutes from time to complete the rout and give Village the perfect start to their quest for the Dudley Eve title.

Village assistant coach DeVrae Tankard, stepping in for Kenny Thompson who is involved with the Bermuda national team, emphasised the importance of concentration for the full game.

“Once we went 2 goals up, we became erratic, and they punished us,” Tankard said.

“We then regained our focus and played the game on our terms. This is a competition that we want to win. We want to be in the final of every competition and win as many trophies as we can.”
