Saltus footballers to showcase skills in Canada tournament
The wait is finally over for Saltus Grammar School who are among the participants at the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools Senior Boys Tournament that kicks off at Ridley College in Ontario on Thursday.
The Bermuda senior school champions are making their first appearance at the event in three years and are looking forward to taking on their rivals.
“The Saltus senior team is returning to the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools football tournament after missing the tournament due to Covid restrictions since 2019,” team coach John Barry Nusum told The Royal Gazette.
“The defending Bermuda School Sports Federation champions are looking forward to renewing past rivalries with other accredited schools at Ridley College, which is the tournament location this year.”
Saltus have travelled with a squad of 17 players aged between 14 and 17 with coaches Timmy Figureido and Lynn Emery leading the trip.
The local school are facing a busy opening -day schedule as they will take on St George’s Vancouver and St John’s Ravencourt in back-to-back matches and preparation has not gone without setback after two of their senior players were ruled out through injury.
“This year’s team will have a younger look to it as two seniors, Micah Hollis and Kijali Jean-Marie, miss the tournament due to injury,” Nusum added.
“So this will provide an opportunity for some of the younger players to gain some experience and show their qualities.
“The boys are excited to get out and play and vibes are good. Again, with such a young team their energy is excellent and they are fearless in being ready to perform.”
The tournament lasts until Saturday.
Saltus will also be represented at the upcoming CAIS Under-13 Boys Tournament hosted by Armbrae Academy in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from October 18 to 21.
