Kenny Thompson, the Bermuda assistant coach, says the Gombey Warriors are confident of coming away with a positive result from their Concacaf Nations League clash against Belize tomorrow.

Bermuda sit third in their four-team group after a goalless home draw against French Guiana with a 4-3 defeat away to St Vincent & the Grenadines last month, but Thompson is convinced that better is to come.

“We are confident going into the game,” an optimistic Thompson told The Royal Gazette.

“We had a neutral performance at home in the first game with a new coaching staff and a lot of new players. Then we feel we did a lot of things well in the game against St Vincent and it was just that brief spell where we lacked a little bit of fight to grind through a difficult period, conceded three goals and then a fourth in the second half.

“We played much better in the second half and just didn’t execute where we needed to, because in that game even though we fell behind with better execution we could have even got a point out of that game.

“I think right now we are all in a place where we want to show our true selves. We want to put that result behind us and make it right in this game.

“The challenge is always the same in international football. All of the teams in this group pose similar type of challenges but we’re up for it. It’s what we do.”

Bermuda’s squad has already undergone a mini overhaul with five changes from the previous match as Justin Donawa, Jaylon Bather, Djair Williams and J’Nai Steede have been recalled to squad and Keziah Martin a new addition.

“The group gets along really well,” Thompson sais. “There is a really great vibe in the group between themselves and also with what we’re asking them to do in every sense. It’s really a great group to be working with and I am sure that they are looking forward to the challenge of getting a first win in this group.”

The team’s preparations have gone smoothly since arriving in the Central American country earlier in the week.

“So far it’s going well. We arrived on Monday and did some basic acclimatisation activities and by Tuesday afternoon we started the real training on the pitch and doing the team organisational things,” Thompson said.

“We had a session on Tuesday and a session this morning [Wednesday] and have another one on Thursday, which will be on the stadium pitch and then we play on Friday.

“We’ve organised things based on our challenges and acclimatising to the time zone that we’re in. We are three hours behind Bermuda and with so many players coming from the UK we’re all in different time zones, so we spent the first few days setting our body clock but so far so good.”

The game is set to kick off at 11pm Bermuda time and conditions are challenging with the warmer climate in Belize causing some concerns.

“It is very hot so the kick-off is at 8pm local time here,” Thompson said.

“It’s really, really hot and on Wednesday during our session it was close to 100 degrees, so we had to manage the work accordingly.

“It’s one of those things that we can’t control so we are just organising our preparation so that we don’t think too much about it, but certainly we have to deal with it on match day and I think we will be all right.

“The sun will be down at matcht time so it will be slightly different than what we faced in training sessions.”

Bermuda will host Belize in the return fixture at Flora Duffy Stadium on Tuesday.
