Corona League champions Inter Bermuda make FA Cup debut
Corona League champions Inter Bermuda will achieve another milestone when they make their debut in the prestigious FA Cup at Goose Gosling Field tonight.
Nicholas Stefani’s team will lock horns with First Division side Southampton Rangers, who finished runners-up in the inaugural competition in 1956, in an intriguing David versus Goliath preliminary-round clash, which kicks off at 8pm.
“It’s our first time in the FA Cup and for us it’s going to be a great first experience” Stefani told The Royal Gazette.
“This is definitely a big motivation for our players and they are all very excited to play this game.”
Stefani has been putting in the hard yards in preparation and has already done his homework on his opponents.
“We went last week to watch their game at Goose Gosling Field to see how they play and try and understand what we need to do,” he added.
“It’s going to be a big challenge for us and I hope we can do well. It’s going to be an honour to play a team from another division and is going to challenge us and show what level we really are.”
Although his team are favourites, Rangers coach Keith Jennings isn’t taking the opponent for granted.
“I have played against them in the Corona League and they are a organised unit,” he said.
“They stick together and have a game plan. They can be an unknown so you have to respect them but just play our game.”
Rangers have found the going tough so far after losing their opening two First Division matches of the season.
“We are at a rebuilding stage, so my expectations are not that high but at the same time we are just trying to get things on the go,” Jennings added.
“Hopefully this could possibly give us that kick-start we are looking for. We are just taking it game by game.”
