LeiLanni Nesbeth on target as Florida State thrash title rivals Notre Dame
LeiLanni Nesbeth hailed Florida State University’s 4-1 demolition of fellow title hopefuls Notre Dame at Seminoles Soccer Complex on Thursday.
The unbeaten Atlantic Coast Conference leaders virtually had things all their own way Bermuda forward Nesbeth getting on the scoresheet with her second goal of the season.
“Obviously it was a great win against a really good opponent putting us in a great spot nation wide and within the conference,” Nesbeth told The Royal Gazette.
“It was easily our best team performance thus far in the season which is really positive and definitely built up our confidence.
“It was just a well- rounded team performance. Defensively we were aggressive as well as in our attack.”
Midfielder Onyi Echegini gave the Seminoles the lead in the seventh minute after losing her marker and firing in Jordynn Dudley’s cross in a heavily crowded box.
However, after weathering some pressure the visitors equalised in the 28th minute when midfielder Kristina Lynch headed home Leah Klenke’s cross.
The visitors then squandered two opportunities to take the lead which came back to haunt them when Echegini grabbed her second goal of the match in the 43rd minute with a shot from just inside of the box.
Forward Jody Brown doubled the Seminoles’s advantage in the 68th minute after converting Kaitlyn Zipay’s pass before Nesbeth grabbed the hosts’ fourth goal in the 77th minute with a shot from outside of the box.
The Seminoles top the ACC standings by three points over nearest rival Notre Dame with North Carolina a farther two points adrift of the leaders in third.
