Saltus clinch schools tournament title in Canada
A triumphant Saltus Grammar School will return home carrying extra luggage after being crowned Canadian Accredited Independent Schools Under-13 Division Boys champions in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Saturday.
Goals from Conor O’Sullivan, Conor Thomas, Chaz Edmead and Mackay Browne guided the local school to an emphatic 4-0 win over Upper Canada College in a lopsided final at Armbrae Academy and maiden CAIS Division One title.
“I am really proud of the boys,” an elated coach John Barry Nusum told The Royal Gazette.
“We had expectations of the group and we talked about competing well with the boys that we had with this particular team.
“We came into it with expectations and the boys actually exceeded it where a lot of teams we played they made them look a little bit more average than they actually were so I am very proud of the boys again with the expectation.
“Once the group stage was finished, everyone kind of knew we were the team to beat, and so then they had that little chip on their shoulder of not letting up and did the job; got the victory at the end, got the championship so very proud of the boys.”
Salltus applied early pressure and broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion with midfielder O’Sullivan lashing home from 35-yards with a blast that cannoned in off the crossbar.
Thomas then doubled their advantage after reacting quickest to a rebound from team-mate and fellow midfielder Jace Postlethewaite whose shot was parried by the UCC goalkeeper.
The game effectively ended as a contest when striker Edmead drove into the box and buried his effort to make it 3-0 just before the break.
With the title all but secured, striker Browne rounded off the scoring in the second half after slotting in at the back post.
Earlier, Saltus edged St George School 1-0 on a goal from O’Sullivan in the semi-final to advance to the final pitting the top seeds from the group stage of the competition against each other.
Remarkably, Nusum’s team went undefeated to the title, scoring 46 goals and conceding just one in eight matches.
“It was a good tournament and hopefully a good experience for a lot of these guys in winning and how to play the right way,” Nusum, the assistant senior national team coach, added.
“We won in different ways and it was good to see the boys kind of grow in that sense.”
Edmead was Saltus’ leading goal scorer with ten, which included two hat -trick, while O’Sullivan was named player of the tournament.
The school was led on the pitch by midfielders O’Sullivan and Thomas and defender Tyler Pickering who shared the captaincy between them.
