Mia Fishel scores first goal for United States

Mia Fishel is congratulated after scoring her first goal for the United States

Mia Fishel’s rise to prominence continues apace as she scored her first goal for the United States last night.

Fishel, who came on as substitute for US legend Alex Morgan at the start of the second half in the friendly against Colombia, got on the end of a cross by Emily Sonnett to head her side in front after 56 minutes, with her side going on to win 3-0.

The striker, whose father Patrick is Bermudian, was visibly delighted to open her account for the national side and rolled out her big fish celebration as she was mobbed by her team-mates.

Speaking after the game, Fishel revealed just how much it meant to get on the scoresheet.

“It was a dream,” Fishel said. “I mean, every little girl dreams of being on this team. To be here and to be able to score with my family and friends in the stands, it's just amazing.

“I had a plan, so I just went out there and I did my thing. I knew that I just needed to be myself and go have fun.”

It has been a whirlwind few months for Fishel, who became the tenth most valuable player in women’s football history after she signed for Super League side Chelsea in the summer for a reported $250,000.

The 22-year-old scored on her debut for the West London club in a 2-1 win over rivals Tottenham Hotspur and has now broken her duck in the senior national team, with the United States.
