LeiLanni Nesbeth’s Florida State prepare for ACC title defence
LeiLanni Nesbeth and her Florida State University team-mates will be looking to continue their dominance in the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Championship this week.
The champions and No 1 seeds will begin their title defence against fifth-seeds Pittsburgh in the semi-final at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina on Thursday in what will be the second meeting between the two rivals this month.
The winner will meet the winner of the remaining semi-final pitting No 3 seeds Clemson against No 2 seeds Notre Dame with the final to be held on Sunday at the same venue.
Looking ahead to the match Nesbeth says she and her team-mates are excited and up for the task at hand.
“We feel good and confident but not too confident, which is key,” Nesbeth said. “We have had an undefeated season which is extremely impressive and we haven’t lost to either of the three teams left in the ACC tournament. However, these teams are really good.
“Pittsburgh is really good. They are organised, strong and have some really key pieces to their team that can hurt you if you don’t respect them.
“We are confident with how we can play on both ends of the ball. But we’re also aware of how much grit and fight it’s going to take to beat any of these ACC teams again later this week and I know we’re all excited and ready to battle.”
Florida State are gunning for a fourth straight ACC title as well as the ACC regular season and championship double for the fourth time in school history.
They clinched the regular season title with an emphatic 5-0 thrashing of North Carolina State in front of their own fans at Seminole Soccer Complex last week with Nesbeth providing an assist.
“This is a great position to be in at this stage of the season,” she added.
“I think early on our team faced some adversity having to pull out some challenging late victories against teams.
“Our resilience and our determination to never give up in my opinion has been one of our biggest strengths and has become part of our teams identity.”
School senior Nesbeth experienced mixed emotions after helping her team clinch the regular season title as it was her final appearance playing at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
“It was definitely bittersweet and I haven’t really spent much time dwelling on the fact that was my last regular season match at Florida State after five seasons but definitely crazy to think about,” she said. “However, I am looking forward to the post season. This is definitely the highlight of the year; the games mean everything, the stakes are high.
“It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to making this year even more memorable.”
