LeiLanni Nesbeth helps Florida State retain ACC title
LeiLanni Nesbeth helped unbeaten Florida State University to a fourth straight Atlantic Coast Conference Championship title and tenth overall on Sunday.
The defending champions and No 1 seeds edged No 7 seeds Clemson 2-1at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.
“It is a surreal moment for sure,” school senior Nesbeth told The Royal Gazette. “It is crazy just taking it all in knowing this was my last ACC championship game.
“I could not be happier and more proud of my team for our performance in the tournament and during this entire season.”
Midfielder Onyi Echegini gave Florida State the lead in the seventh minute after lashing home from the top of the box for her twelfth goal of the season.
Clemson came storming back and equalised in the 29th minute after Mackenzie Duff headed in Dani Davis’s corner at the back post.
However, Florida State would not be denied glory as Echegini latched on to Beata Olsson’s low cross and beat her marker before converting the game winner in the 57th minute.
“The game went as expected, we knew it was going to be physical,” Nesbeth added. “They are an aggressive team with some good players and are a threat in the air.
“I think outside of the goal they scored off the set-piece, we handled their set-pieces well and dealt with service into our box well.
“Our defence was incredible, especially Mimi Van Zanten who came into these last couple of games and really stepped up and helped us tremendously on the defensive side. I thought she had an incredible game.
“Our attackers did their job, obviously Joe Echegini is as clinical as it gets. We knew we were going to get chances but we also knew how important it was going to be to manage their threats and I feel as though we did that well.”
The win completed an impressive double for Nesbeth and her team-mates having also claimed the ACC regular season title and clinched their spot in the NCAA tournament, where they will do battle for national bragging rights.
“We are eager, hungry and extremely excited. This is the part of the season where you just empty the tank and you just find a way to win no matter what,” Nesbeth said.
”It’s been a long season, a long week so far. We need to make sure we’re taking care of all of the little details and just continue to take it one game at a time.
“I’m looking forward to the NCAA Tournament and everyone is eager to finish off this season strong and compete for a national championship.”
