Berkeley Institute win Senior School Girls six-a-side tournament
The Berkeley Institute held off a determined Warwick Academy to win the Senior School Girls six-a-side football tournament at the Clyde Best Centre of Excellence on Thursday.
After a few nervous moments for each of the talented teams, Berkeley finally broke the deadlock through Kalila Daley and extended their lead with further goals from Janiya Sealey and Evans Welch to take a commanding 3-0 lead into half-time.
Warwick started the second half intent on fighting back and got two quick goals through Sanaa Simmons and Amiya James but could not find an equaliser despite intense pressure on their opposition’s goal.
Saltus Grammar School finished third after easing past CedarBridge Academy 5-0. Katherine Rosario Bean and Abby Autmezguine scored two each while Ella Newton rounded out the scoring for Saltus.
Warwick Academy had earlier defeated Saltus 3-2 on penalties after neither team could score in normal time in the first semi-final, while Sealey’s goal was enough to book Berkeley Gold a spot in the final with a 1-0 win over CedarBridge Academy.
