LeiLanni Nesbeth and Florida State ease through NCAA first round
LeiLanni Nesbeth helped top seeds Florida State University cruise through the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 rout of Morehead State.
After a fairly tentative start in front of more than 1,600 fans at Florida State’s Seminole Soccer Complex, the home side finally found a foothold in the game, with Onyi Echegini shot well saved, while Jordynn Dudley and Nesbeth both hit the woodwork.
Following a period of prolonged dominance, Florida State finally found a breakthrough in the 35th minute when Olivia Garcia got on the end of Sophia Nguyen’s cross to head home her third goal of the campaign.
Just four minutes later, Florida State doubled their advantage when Ran Iwai’s free kick found its way through to the back post and they added a third seven minutes after the interval, with Echegini teeing up Lauren Flynn to find the net.
Florida State continued to pour forward, adding two further goals in the latter stages. The fourth came in the 76th minute when Maggie Taitano assisted Jody Brown before Beata Olsson wrapped up the scoring in the 88th minute.
As well as sealing progression to the next round, the victory also means Florida State set a new school record of 18 games unbeaten. They will host eighth seeds Texas A&M, who narrowly overcame Colorado 1-0, in the second round on Friday.
