LeiLanni Nesbeth helps Florida State advance to NCAA Championship quarter-finals
LeiLanni Nesbeth and her Florida State University team-mates stormed into the quarter-final of the NCAA Championship with a 5-0 demolition of Texas at the Seminole Soccer Complex last weekend.
The tournament top seeds jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage and never looked back with the game all but sewn up in the first 20 minutes.
Florida State took the lead in the fifth minute when Texas A&M goalkeeper Mia Justus parried midfielder Onyi Echegini’s shot into the path of Beata Olsson, who headed into an empty net.
The home side then tightened their grip with goals from Echegini and forward Jordynn Dudley, who converted from the penalty spot to place them firmly in the driver’s seat at the interval.
Florida State picked up where they left off in the second half with additional strikes from midfielder Taylor Huff and forward Olivia Garcia capping another dominant and ruthless display in front of their own supporters.
It proved to be an extra special occasion for Seminoles goalkeeper Cristina Roque, who kept a school-record fourteenth clean sheet in the NCAA Tournament.
Senior forward Nesbeth and her team-mates will attempt to keep their title hopes alive when they host Pitt on Friday in their sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship quarter-finals.
Florida State clinched their spot in the tournament after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship for the fourth straight time this month.
